Shaiquel “Shai” McGruder was born October 13, 1999, in Dayton, Ohio. Shai began playing basketball in the 5th grade, and immediately grew a love for the sport that has continued. Shaiquel earned her first collegiate look as a Freshman, from Ohio State University and University of Indiana– University of Dayton; University of Kentucky; and others shortly followed. Shai has built a resume that she has continued to add to over the years throughout high school and into collegiate play. Shai has an exceptionally high motor that she has become known for and makes players defending her a challenge. Shaiquel McGruder has always danced to a different tune. The beat picks up after tip-off. The Lobos’ ultra-athletic 6-foot forward then employs her unusual skill to amplify appreciation of fans and cause headaches for opposing coaching staffs. Shai has accumulated several awards, recognitions and accolades that span from high school and throughout her collegiate career. Shai joined the 1000 point club in both her high school and collegiate career. Shai has developed her leadership abilities on both platforms. Leading in scoring, rebounds, steals, blocks, and field goal percentage throughout high school– it would come as no shock for her to do the same at the University of New Mexico. Finishing with a highly decorated list of accomplishments, this 5th year senior leaves behind her mark at UNM, having joined the history rankings of record holders.
